Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship Through Other Routes

Turkish citizenship can be obtained in via different ways in specific circumstances such as regaining Turkish citizenship, adoption etc. These have specific requirements to be met.


Can People Who Lose Turkish Citizenship Regain Turkish Citizenship?

Yes, people who lost their Turkish citizenship for some reason, although they used to be Turkish citizens, can acquire Turkish citizenship if they want to become Turkish citizens again. Depending on their current status, these people can acquire Turkish citizenship, depending on the residence condition or regardless of the residence condition.


How to Regain Turkish Citizenship Depending on Residence Conditions?

Those who lost their Turkish citizenship by the Presidential decision and those who lost their Turkish citizenship through choice can regain their Turkish citizenship by the decision of the Ministry, provided that they do not have a situation that will pose an obstacle in terms of national security and that they have resided in Turkey for three years.


How to Regain Turkish Citizenship Regardless of Residence Conditions?

The following people, provided that they do not have a situation that will constitute an obstacle in terms of national security, can regain Turkish citizenship by the decision of the Ministry, regardless of their residence period in Turkey:

  • Those who lost their Turkish citizenship by obtaining a permission to leave,

  • Those who have lost their Turkish citizenship due to their parents, and those who have not exercised their right to vote within three years from their maturity.


What are the Required Documents for the Application to Regain Turkish Citizenship?

A file consisting of the following documents is prepared by the application authorities on behalf of the foreigner who has applied to regain Turkish citizenship:

  • Form petition stating the request.

  • Extract of civil registry taken from the system by the application authorities

  • Passport or similar document showing which state the person is a citizen of, and if it is stateless, the relevant document if it is possible to obtain it.

  • A document showing the identity of the person, such as a birth certificate or an extract of civil registry.

  • Marital status document.

  • The document regarding the changes in the marital status, if any, after the person lost his Turkish citizenship,

  • If the person is married civil registry showing spouse and children with family ties.

  • If there has been a change in the identity information of the person after losing Turkish citizenship, a document showing this.

  • In accordance with Article 14 of the Law, the person who wants to regain Turkish citizenship, has resided in Turkey for three years without interruption from the date of application, a document from the provincial police directorate showing the dates of entry and exit to country and a residence permit for a period sufficient to finalize the citizenship procedures from the date of application.

  • A receipt showing that the service fee has been paid.


Who Can Acquire Turkish Citizenship by the Right to Choice? What are the terms?

People who lost their Turkish citizenship by obtaining a leave of absence, who lost their citizenship involuntarily due to their parents, and who made a written notification to acquire Turkish citizenship within three years from their adulthood can acquire Turkish citizenship by using their right to choice.


The right to choose and the loss of Turkish citizenship become effective as of the date of the Ministry's decision regarding the determination of the existence of the conditions for the use of this right.


What are the Required Document for Application to Acquire Turkish Citizenship by the Right to Choice?

A file consisting of the following documents is prepared by the application authorities on behalf of the foreigner who has applied to acquire Turkish citizenship:

  • Form petition stating the request.

  • Extract of civil registry taken from the system by the application authorities and showing the closed record of the person.

  • Passport or similar document showing which state the person is a citizen of, and if it is stateless, the relevant document if it is possible to obtain it.

  • Marital status certificate.

  • Document regarding the changes in marital status, if any, after the person lost his Turkish citizenship.

  • If married, a copy of the birth certificate or similar document proving the family ties of the spouse and children.

  • A document showing the change in identity information, if any, after the person lost his Turkish citizenship.

  • A receipt showing that the service fee has been paid.


Can You Obtain Turkish Citizenship when Adopted?

A minor who has been adopted by a Turkish citizen may acquire Turkish citizenship as of the date of the decision, provided that he/she does not have a situation that would constitute an obstacle in terms of national security and public order.


What are the Required Document for Turkish Citizenship Through Adoption?

A file consisting of the following documents is prepared by the application authorities on behalf of the foreigner who has applied to acquire Turkish citizenship through adoption:

  • Form petition stating the wish of the adopter.

  • Birth certificate.

  • Birth report based on birth certificate.

  • Passport or similar document showing which state the person is a citizen of, and if it is stateless, the relevant document if it is possible to obtain it.

  • Extract of civil registry taken from the system by the application authorities of the adoptive person.

  • A receipt showing that the service fee has been paid.
